A Lesson Plan for Woodturning
by James Rogers

A Lesson Plan for Woodturning

Step-by-Step Instructions for Mastering Woodturning Fundamentals

Woodturning is one of the fastest growing hobbies in the United States, but most beginning woodturners don’t have access to formal training or experienced teachers. Written by a professional woodturning instructor with over a decade’s teaching experience, “A Lesson Plan for Woodturning” is a systematic, skill-building introduction that helps beginning woodturners master basic woodworking techniques on their own.

“A Lesson Plan for Woodturning” provides a complete, self-directed course in woodturning safety, tools, and techniques that will help any beginning woodturner learn the basics on his or her own time. Using methods proven in the classroom, “A Lesson Plan for Woodturning” provides the equivalent of three semester-length classes in one book.

Designed to give readers a thorough grounding in every essential woodturning technique, “A Lesson Plan for Woodturning,” is systematically organized to teach basic skills that are building blocks for mastering more complex tasks. Each lesson features projects designed to develop the specific skill discussed. The structure, order and specific exercises are based on classroom-tested experience in teaching woodturning to both adult and younger students and are well tested in the classroom.

Each project is thoroughly documented with step-by-step instructions, illustrations and photographs, showing the specific tasks, positions, and cutting motions needed to successfully complete the project. Woodturning A Fresh Approach
by Robert Chapman

Woodturning A Fresh Approach

Robert Chapman has written a wonderful book called "WOODTURNING: A Fresh Approach". He bypasses all the business of learning to use the lathe and turn spindles. He writes with the assumption that anyone who buys the book has learned to use a lathe with some small degree of expertise. He takes you from simple little bowls to lidded containers to natural edge and "turning air." The pictures are plentiful and beautifully done. This book is a work of art as well as an interesting text book for the turning devotee.

I was especially impressed that Robert takes us not only step by step through the turning process for each type of bowl, he also takes us step by step through the process of harvesting the wood for those bowls. He talks about the drying process, how to cut and seal, how to plan which bowls to turn from which pieces of wood; but best of all, he drops a little known secret about producing "SPALTED" wood. I just laughed when I saw what he did. Spalted wood is so beautiful when turned, and we pay a huge price for spalted pieces. No longer will we pay through the nose for our spalting. A plastic bag, some planning, and a cup of plant food will give you exactly what you want. "Do it yourself spalting" What a concept!!

Turn a Bowl
with Ernie Conover

Turn a Bowl

Get great bowl-turning results the first time around.

Turning a bowl is the most popular project in the turning seminars that I run. My five-day workshops start with spindle turning; and after two days of spindle exercises, there is a buoyant mood when students chuck up bowl blanks and take bowl gouges in hand. It is much like watching traditional Olympic ice-skating. After the compulsory figures program, the free skating is a joy. People get excited and really start having fun. There is something magical about turning a bowl, because it is both creative and useful. In this age of mass-produced, plastic look-alike house wares, the knowledge that you have produced something real, artistic, and unique is a splendid touchstone.

The Creative Woodturner is not your usual "how-to" woodturning book. It won't tell you what a chuck is, how sharpen a scraper, or how to turn a goblet. Instead, this book is a "how-to" for unlocking curiosity, how to break the rules, and for following one's own artistic path with confidence. Designed to give readers a wide-persepective on creativity, The Creative Woodturner begins first with insightful commentary, quotes, and examples from the woodturning and art community that will both inspire and inform. In addition, the author shares his Idea Tools: questions to ask during the planning and creative process that are as important to the creation of the woodturning project as any equipment in the shop. Finally, 16 one-of-a-kind projects - from boxes and vessles to bowls and one-of-a-kind scultpures - are featured that will spark the creative mindset of any woodturner. Each project is documented with instructions and crisp photography highlighting the key steps, techniques, and tasks necessary for completion. In taking the reader through each project, the author pulls back the curtain on his woodturning magic and shares his vision and how the Idea Tools and creative thinking emerges in each project. An inspiring and enjoyable read not only for woodturners, but for any artist, The Creative Woodturner will anyone to think and see differently so time is spent at the lathe - or whatever creative pursuit it is — creating the original ideas instead of imitating someone else.
