Even a piece of wood that has remained unchanged for a long period of time because it has been in a stable interior environment will change dimensions if moved to a new location with different conditions. There are, however, various ways to cope with this phenomenon, as woodworker Graham Blackburn demonstrates in Panel Raising, his second video about frame and panel making.

Blackburn discusses the benefits of various shapes to make your panel -- wider versus taller -- and orientation of the grain. He demonstrates how to make a thin panel appear thicker than the frame by feathering, rabbeting or fielding the edges; and he shows you the merits of different design possibilities such as double-fielded panels, centrally beaded or reeded panels, carved and even painted panels.

Simple tools and the correct technique are all it takes to produce flawless finishes by hand. In this video, professional finisher Jeff Jewitt demonstrates how to apply five common top coats: shellac, oil, varnish, solvent lacquer, and water-based lacquer. You'll see how to:

• use tung and linseed oils
• brush on varnish
• French polish
• rub out a finish.
