Wolverine Grinding Jig

Wolverine Grinding Jig - 2291

Note:
Sharpening system & Turning Tool Not Included

The WOLVERINE Grinding Jig is the CORE component of the ONEWAY WOLVERINE line of grinding products. Producing razor sharp tools and finely finished bevels has moved from an art into a science. Owning the WOLVERINE Grinding Jig will ultimately save you time, frustration and money. You can now grind your tools properly the first time. Uniform cutting edges and single facet bevels will give you safer, more predictable tools. Because you are grinding your tools less, both your wheels and tools will last longer. The Grinding Jig comes with two bases - grinders come with two wheels, so we include two bases. By mounting one under each wheel, grinding operations can be rapidly performed on either side of your grinder without having to re-position bases. Bases are equipped with cam-lock clamping that makes the removal and installation of all attachments possible in 10 seconds or less. The cam forces all attachments rigidly into the base which eliminates all play. This Grinding Jig also comes equipped with an adjustable angle sturdy platform that has a 3 x 5 inch working area. This platform can be used on both the left and right hand sides of the grinder. An adjustable speed handle makes adjustments quick and easy and ensures that the handle is never in the way. The Wolverine System was designed to replace conventional light duty toolrests with heavy duty universal grinding and dressing jigs for low cost grinders. Properly installed, with balanced wheels, this system will outperform grinders costing in excess of $500.00.

NOTE: When fitted to heavy duty grinders with cast iron tool rests and guards, some modification to these rests and guards may be necessary. If in doubt inquire before purchase.

Why is owning a grinding fixture so important?
More consistent grinding will give more consistent cutting, which will lead to fewer digs and better results.

Our Grinding Jig can be easily used to
sharpen the following tools:

  • GOUGES are ground in the Vee-Arm supplied with the WOLVERINE Grinding Jig. The Vee-Arm slides in the base and holds your bevel angle constant. It is long enough to hold any standard tool. Adjusting the arm is as easy as unlocking the clamping lever, moving the arm in or out, and re-clamping the lever. Once the proper angle is determined, turn on your grinder. Place the tool in the vee-pocket, rest the cutting edge directly on the wheel, and roll the tool. It's that simple. A popular shape to a bowl gouge is an "Irish" or "Side" grind. This type of grind is best achieved using the Vari-Grind Attachment.
  • CHISELS Carpenter chisels up to 1-1/4" wide can be sharpened using the Wolverine's Vee-Arm. The arm is adjusted to set the bevel, and the chisel can be ground with small sideways motions and light cutting pressure. Three or four strokes on a strop will generate a razor sharp edge.
  • SCRAPERS The Wolverine Grinding Jig comes with a 3 x 5 inch adjustable platform which allows even large scrapers to be ground with ease.
  • PARTING TOOLS Parting tools are sharpened using the platform. Laying it flat on its side on the platform gives a slight hollow grind which is very desirable for clean parting.
  • SKEWS The Wolverine's Vee arm can be used to sharpen skews, but a far superior method is ONEWAY's Skew Grinding Attachment.
  • CARVING TOOLS With a finely dressed 80 or 120 grit wheel, even very small carving tools can be superbly ground using the standard Vee-Arm.

Wolverine Skew Grinding Attachment

Oneway Wolverine Skew Grinding Attachment

The Skew Jig was designed specifically for grinding Skews. It is quick and easy to use, and will give you an amazingly flat bevel. One reason that the skew leaves such an incredible finish on work pieces is due to its very thin edge which leaves naturally cleaner cuts. This creates a problem with sharpening the skew as this thin edge will easily fold over during grinding. ONEWAY's Skew Grinding Attachment minimizes this problem by allowing the skew to be mechanically held. The unique offset handle position actually reduces the hollow grind generated and leaves a stronger more predictable tool.

Problem Until now, we have been using the Wolverine Grinding Jig's Vee-Arm to grind skews. Straight from the pocket, a hollow grind can be produced at any angle you wish to achieve, or the rounded toe used by some turners. However, two problems occur using the Vee-Arm:

  • The bevel of the skew should be flat, and this method does produce a hollow grind
  • The cutting edge and bevel are not parallel

Solution Solving the first problem seemed impossible, to get a flatter grind you need a bigger wheel, so we set out to solve the second problem. The result was the ONEWAY Skew Grinding attachment. Very simply the jig is two pockets offset 3-1/2" to either side of center of the wheel. When the handle of the skew is placed in these pockets, the cutting edge becomes square to the wheel. But after we tried the jig something amazing happened. The bevel flattened itself out, which solves the first problem; excessive hollow grind.

How does this happen? Well, as the tool is moved side to side on the wheel, the offset position of the handle forces the tool slightly up and down the wheel. As the tool is forced up the wheel it grinds more off the back of the bevel and flattens the grind. The Skew Grinding Attachment produces a virtually flat bevel with greatly improved cutting characteristics. This fixture is a highly recommended option with our Wolverine Grinding System.

SKEW SHAPE: The skew, in order to cut effectively, should be ground with an angle of 70 degrees to 80 degrees looking from the top, and an included angle of 20 degrees to 35 degrees, depending on the wood to be cut and personal preference. The surfaces should be flat, not convex or concave. In an attempt to obtain a flat surface, some turners will grind the skew on the side of the grinding wheel, but this method is not recommended as some roundness will occur and for safety reasons.

Vari-Grind Attachment for 1/8" to 5/8" Diameter Tools

Vari-Grind Attachment for 1/8" to 5/8" Diameter Tools

The Wolverine Original Vari-Grind Jig will properly shape and maintain the edge on standard bowl gouge, the modern side grind shape and the traditional fingernail shape. These shapes however are difficult both to grind and maintain. OneWay has spent a considerable amount of time and effort to develop a system which will consistently produce sharp, repeatable geometries on turning tools for the woodturner. This single attachment will produce every shape from the first mentioned fingernail grind right up to the side grind and everything in between to suit your needs.

Note: This Jig is designed to be used with the Wolverine Grinding Jig. This attachment can be used with it by creating a suitable rest position for the fixture.

Vari-Grind 2 with Base

Vari-Grind 2 with Base - 3920

The Vari-Grind 2 features all the benefits of the Original Vari-Grind but increases ease of use, and safety. The Vari-Grind 2 restrains both side-to-side motion of the tool, as well as the pivot point so that the tool cannot slip in either direction.

The patented pivot point allows the tool to move in true cylindrical motion about the adjusting rod which produces a true fingernail and side grind at any bevel angle. The Vari-Grind 2 is the only restrained grinding jig that perform in this way. With the Vari-Grind 2 sharpening is virtually fool proof.

Designed with a bearing based clamp fitted with a nylon cap, the Vari-Grind 2 cannot damage the tool and can be easily replaced if it ever wears out.

Instructional DVD included.

If you've been looking for a fast and effective way to balance your grinding wheels, look no further. Easy to setup and use, our new balancing system will quickly and easily allow you to balance your grinding wheels for life.

ONEWAY's balancing operation compensates for:

  • Wheel out of round
  • Wheel density
  • Hole not centered
  • Density variation
  • Thickness side to side variation of the wheel

Grinding wheels are sensitive to vibration due to their mass and speed. The faster your grinder, the more necessary it is to use balanced wheels.

Unbalanced grinding wheels are NOT something you want on your grinder for several reasons:

  • Inferior finishes on the tools that are being ground
  • Harm the bearings and bearing housings of the machine
  • Grinder may move wheels will not last very long due to excess material being removed threw the dressing and/or grinding process

Unfortunately, bench or pedestal grinders do not come equipped with a means to balance wheels.

Our Precision Balancing System will provide the following benefits:

  • Wheels, bearings, and bearing housings will last longer
  • Your machine will make less noise
  • Finishes on your tools and projects will be improved with less effort
